Tukes Revised the Hazard Assessment Guide Almost Completely

The first publication of the Hazard Assessment Guide marks a quarter of a century. During this time, processes, equipment, and the surrounding society have evolved tremendously. Information technology and automation now offer increasingly advanced ways to control and secure processes while saving resources. However, they also introduce new safety challenges.
What’s New in the Guide?
Previously, safety concerns were local, and preparations were made accordingly. Now, boiler plants are more broadly recognized as crucial parts of society’s critical infrastructure, providing electricity and heat. Therefore, the updated guide includes new requirements for boiler plant cybersecurity as well as the obligations set by the European Union’s NIS2 directive. In addition to process risk identification, the guide also emphasizes the importance of safety management and change management.
How are we involved?
Insteam Consulting, now Tarkes Quality, has been assisting in hazard assessments for 15 years, from smaller projects to nationally significant sites, such as the recent process safety risk assessments for the Kemi pulp mill project. The hazard assessments we have previously consulted are updated smoothly by our professionals to meet the new requirements, as they already incorporated many of the aspects now being highlighted. For example, we have included cybersecurity assessments in significant projects for over five years.
Customer interest and collaboration
Following the release of the updated guide, we have been pleased to see a significant number of customers reaching out to us. Notably, two of our experts participated in Tukes’ working group. We have already completed several projects, with many more in progress. We look forward to continuing this work.
