Preparation for inspection

For an internal inspection, the pressure equipment to be inspected must be safely isolated from the rest of the process, and electrical devices must be de-energized. To ensure reliable inspection results, all inspection openings must be opened and thoroughly cleaned. Additionally, any extra requirements stipulated by the possible tank work instructions must be taken into account.

Before performing the internal inspection, previous inspection reports should be reviewed, and it should be determined whether there have been significant changes in usage or conditions during the operational period. For critical pressure equipment, a written inspection plan may be prepared as needed before conducting the inspection. The inspection plan defines the inspection methods and scope.

Inspection methods include:

  • visual inspection
  • pressure test
  • endoscopic inspection
  • surface inspections
  • ultrasonic inspection
  • x-ray and isotope imaging
  • creep measurement
  • replica inspection
  • iris inspection
  • eddy current inspection
  • digital radiography
  • wall thickness measurements
